Description
I once believed that digital is digital, which is impervious to signal alteration. Yet one day, I tried a glass optical cable instead of the common plastic optical and got a respectable sound difference. The sound was more uniform and smoother. The highs went higher with a delicate resonance. I could hear the room’s reverberation tails with better clarity.
How could this be? Digital audio is sent it in real time, so the information needs to be correct. It can’t send and verify packets at a slow rate the same way a computer does. The information can be altered, lost, and reflected. A well-designed digital cable can minimize this loss. A very good digital clock can help weed out these errors, but few people own a good clock. Glass optical cables conduct light better!
Reflective properties can even be stronger in one direction verses the other depending on how it is made.
Bending the cable tightly or aggressively will damage it! ~Happy listening
